Tunisia Accelerates High-Speed Train Project to Connect North and South
The Tunisian government is speeding up the high-speed train (TGV) project, aiming to link the north and south of the country, from Bizerte to Ben Guerdane. The project was at the center of a restricted ministerial council held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Government Palace in Kasbah, under the presidency of Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri.
A Key Project in the 2026-2030 Development Plan
Presented as a structuring project of the 2026-2030 Development Plan, this high-performance rail corridor aims to:
- Strengthen territorial cohesion
- Open up several regions
- Support investment
The planned route will connect major urban areas, ports, and logistics platforms. It will also include a link to the Algerian rail network via Annaba, through the Tabarka–Nefza–Mateur–Jdaida lines, before extending to Ras Jedir via Mareth and Médenine, with a link to the port of Zarzis.
Integrating Tunisia into Regional Rail Networks
Beyond domestic mobility, the project aims to integrate Tunisia into larger Maghreb and African rail networks, thus strengthening its regional positioning.
The government has emphasized the need to accelerate procedures to meet the set deadlines.
