President Kais Saïed Meets with Leaders of Strategic Public Enterprises to Address Urgent Measures

Yesterday, on February 17, President Kais Saïed held a meeting with the leaders of two strategic public enterprises: Faïcel Trifa, CEO of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Steg), and Noâman Meraihi, Central Production Director at the National Water Distribution Utility (Sonede). The discussions focused on urgent measures to alleviate the debt burden on individuals and small businesses, as well as a plan to revitalize the national water network.

According to an official presidential communiqué, the Head of State demanded the rapid implementation of a mechanism to reschedule accumulated unpaid bills for households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), many of which have been forced to cease operations due to financial difficulties. On the water front, President Saïed ordered the acceleration of a plan to rehabilitate Sonede's infrastructure. He also requested that water groups benefit from adapted repayment schedules to avoid a sector collapse.

This directive responds to recurring complaints about sudden, often unannounced, water supply interruptions that disrupt the daily lives of Tunisians.
