Italian Company La Minerali Industriali SARL Takes Tunisian State to International Commercial Arbitration
Majdi Karbai, a former Tunisian MP and current resident in Italy, announced on his Facebook page that Italian company La Minerali Industriali SARL, specialized in sand extraction, is taking the Tunisian State to international commercial arbitration.
The company has been active in Tunisia since 2001, extracting high-quality sand that allows for the production of white crystal containing minimal amounts of iron. This high-quality sand was discovered in Tunisia, encouraging the company to establish operations in the country.
However, in 2019, the company faced suspicions and an investigation was launched to verify its activities and financial revenues. In 2022, the Tunisian State decided to impose a fee of 100 dinars (approximately €30) per ton of extracted sand for export, making the operation no longer profitable for the company. As a result, La Minerali Industriali SARL has resorted to international commercial arbitration.
