Tunisia Prepares to Launch a New Era of Statistics with the Imminent Start of the 2024 Population and Housing Census

The Tunisian government is gearing up to launch a new era of statistics with the imminent start of the preparatory work for the 2024 population and housing census. Announced by Feryel Ouerghi, Minister of Economy and Planning, on May 17, this phase marks the beginning of a fully digitized process that promises to transform data collection and analysis in the country.

A New Era of Statistics

The 2024 census stands out for its adoption of the CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing) system, which relies on the use of advanced digital technologies, including PCs and tablets. The census will also create a statistical register of the population with a unified numerical identifier and establish a comprehensive national information system.

Improved Data Quality and Faster Publication

The use of digital methods for all phases of the census guarantees not only an improvement in the quality of the collected data but also their accelerated exploitation and publication. Moreover, this census aims to update and enrich the national statistical system with relevant information reflecting the evolution of Tunisian society and the living conditions of families at the regional and local levels.

A Foundation for Future Censuses and Regional Development

The census will serve as a foundation for future family censuses and enrich the regional database, which is essential for the implementation of balanced development programs across the country.

Census Budget and Timeline

The total cost of the census is estimated at 89 million dinars, with the effective start of the counting process scheduled for November or December 2024, spanning a period of 45 days, according to Bouzid Nsiri, Director-General of the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
