Qatar Boosts Efforts to Attract Foreign Tech Startups

Qatar is strengthening its initiatives to attract foreign technology startups. Through the Startup Qatar Investment Program, the country offers up to $5.5 million to established startups looking to expand their operations in the Qatari market. For companies in the launch phase, funding can reach up to $1.1 million.

Two Distinct Tracks: START and GROW

The program, led by the Qatar Development Bank (QDB), distinguishes between two profiles:

  • START Track: Designed for entrepreneurs who possess a Proof of Concept (PoC) or a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and wish to launch their business in Qatar.
  • GROW Track: Targeted at established startups seeking to extend their operations within the country.

Milestone-Based Funding and Eligibility

Funding is not provided as a lump sum. Instead, amounts are released in tranches based on predefined milestones and objectives agreed upon between the program and the startup.

For the GROW track, companies must meet specific criteria, including:

  • At least three years of operational history.
  • A qualified management team.
  • A solid financial standing.
  • Clear growth prospects.

Comprehensive Support Beyond Capital

Financial support is just one component of the offer. Selected startups can benefit from a wide range of additional services:

  • Regulatory & Administrative Support: Exemptions on certain registration and license renewal fees, as well as solutions for work and entrepreneur visas.
  • Operational Support: Subsidized coworking spaces, assistance with recruitment and internships, and access to innovation and R&D grants.
  • Market Access & Development: Opportunities to have their technological solutions adopted by local companies or sectors, along with training, mentorship, and skills development programs.
  • Visibility & Relocation: Presentation opportunities at exhibitions and events, plus housing support for relocating teams.

Priority Sectors

The program prioritizes startups in the following sectors:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning
  • Fintech
  • Cybersecurity
  • Healthtech
  • Agritech
  • Climate Tech
  • Energy Tech
  • B2B Software
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Robotics
  • Supply Chain
  • Proptech

However, the list remains open to any startup deemed innovative and disruptive.
