National Agency Warns of Dangers of Brazilian Hair Straightening Products Containing Glyoxylic Acid
The National Agency for Risk Assessment has issued a warning about the dangers of Brazilian hair straightening products containing glyoxylic acid, particularly those from the brand "BRAZIL CACAU".
According to the agency, cases of acute kidney failure and kidney poisoning have been reported following the use of these products, as confirmed by the Tunisian Association of Nephrology and Dialysis and the National Center for Pharmacovigilance.
While Brazilian hair straightening is effective in improving the appearance of hair, the glyoxylic acid it contains becomes dangerous when heated, as it transforms into formaldehyde. This substance is highly toxic and carcinogenic, posing a direct threat to human health.
Glyoxylic acid increases the risk of kidney poisoning and can damage kidney function. The vapors released during the heating of this acid cause chronic respiratory irritation, leading to coughing and breathing difficulties. Direct contact with glyoxylic acid can cause severe burns and skin and eye irritation. Repeated exposure to formaldehyde also increases the risks of respiratory and skin cancers.
The Ministry of Health is urging all beauty professionals to immediately stop using products containing glyoxylic acid, emphasizing that the aesthetic benefits do not justify the health risks. It encourages the use of alternative, safe, and effective solutions to preserve consumer health.
Consumers are advised to carefully read labels and check that products do not contain glyoxylic acid or glyoxal. Consumers must be fully informed of the dangers associated with using these products. Hairdressers, who are frequently exposed to these products, are at risk of serious occupational diseases; it is therefore crucial to seek safe alternatives and inform clients of the risks involved.
