Morocco Launches $8.7 Billion High-Speed Train Project and Railway Factory Construction
As part of an $8.7 billion investment program to extend the high-speed rail line from Kenitra to Marrakech, Morocco has launched a project to build a railway factory.
On November 11, Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics, announced a call for expressions of interest for this new industrial unit.
The main objectives are to supply the Moroccan National Railway Company (ONCF) and future high-speed rail projects in Morocco, as well as target export markets in Africa, reinforcing the kingdom's role in the regional rail sector.
Under the 2040 Plan, the ONCF plans to build 1,300 km of high-speed rail lines and 3,800 km of conventional lines to connect 43 cities.
In addition to transportation, it's worth noting that Morocco has secured $415 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to strengthen its climate resilience, particularly in the face of drought affecting its agricultural production. As a result, the country's economic growth is expected to reach 2.6% this year, compared to 3.4% in 2023.
