Tunisian Government Launches Three Major Railway Projects

The Tunisian government has decided to immediately launch three major railway projects, including the modernization of line 6 connecting Tunis to Kasserine, a key section to open up the country's interior.

This decision was made on Friday, May 2, 2025, during a meeting of the Higher Commission for Accelerating the Implementation of Public Projects. The session was dedicated to examining the obstacles blocking several construction sites in the sector.

The projects concerned also feature:

  • The duplication of section 22 between Moknine and Sidi Massoud station (22 km),
  • The purchase of 18 new trains for the TGM line (Tunis – La Goulette – Marsa),
  • And the renewal of railway infrastructure for phosphate transportation.

Legal measures have been ordered to free up illegally occupied land, particularly along the route of line 6. Instructions have also been given to start work without delay on the first phase of the duplication project, connecting Moknine to Sidi Massoud.

This acceleration is in line with the orientations of the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, who advocates for a rapid resumption of public construction projects, particularly those affecting transportation and phosphate, sectors deemed essential for improving citizens' quality of life and boosting the national economy.

The head of government has finally stressed the need for daily monitoring on the ground, enhanced coordination between institutions, and responsibility among actors. Anyone hindering the progress of these projects will be held accountable.
