EU-Tunisia Partnership: Strengthening Relations and Cooperation
According to a press release from the European Union Delegation in Tunisia on February 28, 2025, Stefano Sannino, recently appointed Director-General for the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf (DG MENA), made an official visit to Tunis from February 26 to 28, 2025. The purpose of this visit was to strengthen relations between the European Union (EU) and Tunisia, particularly through discussions on the Tunisian-European partnership and cooperation prospects for the 2025-2027 period.
During his meetings with Tunisian authorities, Sannino emphasized the importance of reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two parties, which is based on the cooperation agreement signed in July 2023. He also mentioned the progress made in the thematic subcommittee cycle, a process actively involving Tunisian civil society, and the preparations for the upcoming EU-Tunisia Association Council, which will take place in the coming months to mark the 30th anniversary of the Association Agreement.
The visit also allowed for the launch of consultations on the new Mediterranean Pact, an initiative by the European Commission aimed at addressing the challenges of the Euro-Mediterranean region and promoting shared prosperity. This pact is expected to be adopted in 2025 and constitutes a key component of the renewed partnership between the EU and Tunisia.
Furthermore, Sannino announced the imminent disbursement of €54 million for two important programs: the Ecological Transition Program (OTE) and the Economic Governance Support Program (PAGE), demonstrating the EU's continued commitment to supporting reforms in Tunisia and the progress made in these areas.
