A Milestone Achievement

This inscription was adopted during the 224th session of the organization in Paris in April 2026, crowning several years of efforts by Tunisian authorities and local stakeholders to recognize the geological and cultural richness of the territory. With this labeling, the Dahar becomes the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Tunisia, positioning the country on the international map of geotourism and sustainable development.

About the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network

The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network currently comprises over 200 sites worldwide, selected for their exceptional geological value and sustainable management strategy.

The Dahar Geopark

Located in southeastern Tunisia, the Dahar covers a vast area including the regions of Tataouine, Médenine, and Gabès. The Djebel Dahar or Dahar is a low mountain range oriented along a north-south axis, dividing the south of Tunisia in two. It is situated on the Tunisian part of the Djebel Demmer, which extends to Libya. Its highest point, the Djebel Zemertène, reaches an altitude of 715 meters, located south of Toujane.

A New Era for Tunisia's Geotourism and Sustainable Development

This recognition marks a significant milestone in Tunisia's efforts to preserve its natural heritage and promote sustainable tourism. As the first UNESCO Global Geopark in the country, the Dahar is poised to become a flagship destination for geotourism and sustainable development, showcasing the country's unique geological and cultural assets to the world.
