France and Tunisia Collaborate to Combat Visa Fraud
The Consul General of France in Tunisia, Dominique Mas, met with the President of the Tunisian Office for Consumer Protection (Otic), Lotfi Riahi, at his request, to discuss the issue of fraudulent practices related to scheduling appointments for visa applications.
Key Takeaways from the Meeting
During the meeting, both parties agreed to strengthen their cooperation to combat networks and intermediaries that monopolize appointment slots and resell them at excessive and abusive prices. This collaboration aims to improve fair access to appointment scheduling services and protect users from these practices, which are considered contrary to transparency and fairness rules.
Context and Background
This initiative comes amidst growing difficulties faced by many citizens in accessing visa services, marked by complex procedures, the proliferation of intermediaries, and high fees, as well as a lack of transparency and recourse in case of refusal. As announced by Otic, the organization has launched a "Tunis Declaration" to frame and defend citizens' rights in the face of difficulties related to visa and international mobility services.
Future Plans and Initiatives
In addition, Otic and several Arab and African associations aim to establish a common approach to better protect consumer rights in visa services, strengthen transparency and fairness in procedures, regulate intermediation companies, and consider creating an African Observatory to monitor these services.
