Tunisian Cinema Wins Four Awards at the 24th Brussels Mediterranean Film Festival Cinemamed
The Tunisian film industry has achieved a new milestone, winning four awards at the 24th edition of the Brussels Mediterranean Film Festival Cinemamed, held from November 28 to December 6, 2024. The festival saw three awards for "Les Enfants Rouges" (The Red Children) by Lotfi Achour in the official competition for feature films, and one award for "Aicha" by Mehdi M. Barsaoui in the Révolution competition, which focuses on the challenges faced by Mediterranean youth.
"Les Enfants Rouges" Wins Special Jury Prize and Prix du Regard Citoyen
Director Lotfi Achour won the Special Jury Prize with "Les Enfants Rouges" for "the great mastery of direction, the incredible performance of the young actors, the point of view brought by the child's gaze on the unheard-of violence of history, the political commitment of the film to a state of our world, the powerful emotion from start to finish, and finally, the accuracy of the adaptation of a real event into cinema," according to the official competition jury. The feature film also received the Prix du Regard Citoyen.
Ali Hlali Wins Mention for His Performance in "Les Enfants Rouges"
The jury also decided to award a mention to Ali Hlali for his performance in "Les Enfants Rouges". They praised his "accuracy and power" in his portrayal, stating that "this very young actor pays a magnificent tribute to the victims of barbarism with his exceptional, moving, and intense performance."
"Aicha" Wins Mention in Révolution Competition
In the Révolution competition, dedicated to films addressing the challenges faced by Mediterranean youth, the jury composed of young talents from the film industry awarded a mention to Fatma Sfar for her performance in "Aicha" by Mehdi M. Barsaoui.
Cinemamed Festival: A Celebration of Mediterranean Cinema
The Cinemamed festival, which aims to showcase the diversity of Mediterranean cinema, programmed over 70 films from the region for its 2024 edition, centered around the theme "At the Crossroads between Rural Exodus and Return to Sources". Among the 19 premieres scheduled for release in Belgium, the two Tunisian feature films "Aicha" by Mehdi M. Barsaoui and "Les Enfants Rouges" by Lotfi Achour were screened.
