Bank Strike: Council Deems Action Unjustified
On the eve of the general strike planned in the banking sector for June 23, 24, and 25, 2026, the Banking and Financial Council (CBF) believes that the social movement is no longer justified. The CBF claims that banks and financial institutions have already applied the planned salary increases for 2026.
Background
In a statement published on June 22, the CBF indicated that all banks and financial institutions have paid salary increases in accordance with the provisions of the current agreement and the government decree related to salary increases in the private sector for 2026. The Council highlights that banking establishments have made efforts to improve working conditions and strengthen the purchasing power of employees, considering human resources a central element in the stability and development of the sector.
Concerns and Implications
The CBF also notes that the choice of strike dates coincides with a particularly sensitive period, marked by salary payments, bill settlements, and various financial operations. The organization considers that the work stoppage may affect individuals, businesses, and economic activity in general.
Call to Action
In light of this situation, the Banking and Financial Council calls on the various parties to prioritize dialogue and take into account the interests of clients and businesses that depend daily on banking services. The CBF reminds that, in accordance with the instructions of the Central Bank of Tunisia, banks are required to ensure essential services during this period, including:
- Maintaining the operation of automatic teller machines
- Payment and fund transfer operations
- Responding to liquidity supply needs
Recognition of Rights
The organization acknowledges the right to strike as a right guaranteed by law. However, it considers that the announced movement for June 23, 24, and 25 takes place when the claims related to salary increases have already been satisfied.
Regulatory Compliance
Finally, the Banking and Financial Council indicates that salary deductions and other regulatory provisions related to strike days will be applied in accordance with current legislation. It calls on sector employees to contribute to maintaining the continuity of banking services during this period.
