British Council Unveils AiBC, a New AI-Powered Learning Engine
With over 90 years of expertise in English language teaching, the British Council is harnessing technology to support human learning, offering learners personalized and instant feedback to boost their speaking confidence.
The British Council announces the launch of AiBC, an artificial intelligence engine designed to help learners practice spoken English and receive real-time feedback on their performance. Integrated into the British Council's online learning platform – which already offers live classes with expert teachers worldwide – AiBC enables users to develop their fluency and confidence between lessons. Developed by the British Council's English language specialists, AiBC builds on decades of experience in pedagogy and language assessment. Leveraging AI, it extends learning beyond the classroom, providing realistic and interactive oral activities that learners can practice at their own pace.
Extended and Interactive Learning
After each module, learners access AI-powered oral activities that:
- Simulate natural conversations for concrete and relevant training
- Foster confidence and spontaneity in communication, whether for work, study, or travel
- Offer immediate and personalized feedback on grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and clarity, presented in a downloadable report
These exercises can be repeated as many times as desired, in a safe and supportive environment, allowing learners to consolidate their knowledge and better prepare for live classes. A recent British Council study reveals that nearly eight out of ten British teachers (79%) have rethought their teaching approach with the emergence of AI, adapting their classes to new digital tools and evolving communication modes. AiBC is part of this evolution: it does not replace teachers but complements them by strengthening learners' ability to develop authentic and lasting communication skills.
AI at the Service of Humans
Designed with a "human-first" approach, AiBC acts as a complement to teacher-led classes. AI provides additional, tailored practice, while teachers continue to offer personalized guidance and support. This combination reinforces learners' confidence and ability to communicate effectively in real-life contexts.
Safe and Ethical Technology
Specifically designed for English language teaching, AiBC ensures learning-centered interactions. Feedback is systematically verified to ensure quality and relevance. All data is processed securely, in compliance with GDPR, to provide a reliable, inclusive, and privacy-respectful learning environment.
"Holding real conversations in English is both a crucial goal and a major challenge for many learners," says Mark Walker, Director of English and Exams at the British Council. "For decades, millions of learners worldwide have trusted the British Council to support their English language learning. With AiBC, we combine our pedagogical expertise with the power of artificial intelligence to enable everyone to practice realistic conversations, progress, and communicate with confidence, anywhere and anytime."
AiBC will continue to evolve to support a broader range of learning and assessment experiences within the British Council's global programs. This launch is part of the organization's ongoing commitment to using innovation responsibly to help learners worldwide master English and build connections between cultures.
