Australian Government Announces Landmark Legislation to Raise Minimum Age for Social Media Use to 16
Today, during a press conference in Canberra, the Australian government announced a new legislation aimed at setting a minimum age of 16 for social media use and holding platforms accountable for compliance. The Australian government claims this decision is a world-first. The legislation will be presented to Parliament during the last two weeks of this year's session, starting on November 18. The age limit would come into effect 12 months after the law is adopted. Platforms such as X, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook will have this year to find ways to exclude Australian citizens under the age of 16. This move comes amidst controversies surrounding TikTok in France and in Tunisia, due to the presence of harmful content on the platform.
