Launch of the SAIL Project: Empowering Tunisian Students for Inclusive Leadership

Today, the City of Culture in Tunis hosted the launch event of the SAIL Project (Student Associations for Inclusive Leadership). This gathering brought together a diverse audience comprising student leaders, mentors, university representatives, civil society organizations, and honored guests, including the US Ambassador to Tunisia, Joey R. Hood.

Supported by the Tunisian American Young Professionals (TAYP) with financial backing from the US Department of State, the two-year SAIL Project (October 2023 to September 2025) covers six regions in Tunisia: Bizerte, Gabès, Kairouan, Tozeur, Tunis, and Jendouba. The initiative aims to train the next generation of Tunisian leaders while promoting sustainable community actions.

In his speech, Ambassador Joey R. Hood praised the potential of Tunisian youth, stating: "Tunisia is fortunate to not have oil or gas, as this forces it to rely on its human and intellectual resources. Unlike other countries in the MENA region, Tunisian civil society is more active and present."

The SAIL Project goes beyond theoretical conferences, offering practical support to turn ideas into concrete actions. Last summer, students received training in soft skills (e.g., pitching a project) and technical skills (e.g., establishing a budget).

Among the selected projects are:

  • ART OF CODE: The Bizeridge, presented by students from the Faculty of Sciences in Bizerte. This project aims to improve transportation in the region through a bridge and traffic surveillance system, addressing efficiency and security challenges.
  • FABLAB ENIT: C4ME (See For Me), developed by students from the National Engineering School of Tunis. This innovative device is designed to help visually impaired individuals recognize letters, numbers, and sound combinations.

According to Hela Ben Hassine, project manager, the five selected teams will receive specific support until summer 2025. Although the Jendouba team was not selected this year, opportunities remain open for the future.

TAYP, the organization behind the project, is a non-profit association that connects Tunisian and American professionals to foster cultural and economic exchanges. Through public-private partnerships, TAYP implements projects focused on export, entrepreneurship, exchange, and education.
