Biological Waste Treatment Unit Launches on Djerba Island
A New Era in Sustainable Energy Production
The construction of a pilot unit for the biological treatment of household and similar waste officially began on Friday, January 16, 2026, on the island of Djerba. The project aims to produce biomethane for electricity generation from organic waste.
Key Project Features
- The unit will process approximately 6,000 tons of organic waste per year
- It is expected to avoid nearly 5,600 tons of carbon emissions annually
- The anticipated electricity production is estimated at 1,600 MWh per year, covering the equivalent of 250 households' consumption
- The process will also generate around 3,900 tons of organic compost
Partnership and Support
The project is being implemented as part of a partnership between the:
- National Agency for Energy Management (Anme)
- National Waste Management Agency (Anged) With the support of:
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
- Japanese and Italian governments The project relies on Tunisian expertise and is part of the efforts to strengthen the biogas system in Tunisia.
