Algeria Launches Major Energy Project Near Tunisian Border

Algeria has launched a new major energy project near the Tunisian border. On April 27, 2026, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjal, officially kicked off the construction of a combined-cycle gas power plant. This project is located in the Tébessa region, with an estimated investment of approximately 184 billion dinars (around $1.38 billion).

Project Details

According to several sources, this power plant could also contribute to electricity exports to the Tunisian market in the long term, thereby strengthening regional energy interconnections. The infrastructure development has been entrusted to the Chinese group China National Electric Engineering Co, in partnership with Sonelgaz-Production de l'électricité, a key public player in the Algerian energy sector. The construction site is expected to span 48 months, with an anticipated commissioning date of 2030.

Power Plant Capacity and Technology

With a capacity of 1,406 megawatts, this power plant will become the second-largest in the country after the one in Jijel. It will rely on combined-cycle technology, which generates electricity from gas and steam turbines, recovering residual heat. This process significantly improves energy efficiency and reduces fuel consumption by around 30%, according to several sources.

Regional Energy Implications

The launch of this project highlights Algeria's efforts to develop its energy sector and strengthen regional energy cooperation. The potential export of electricity to Tunisia could enhance energy security and promote economic integration in the region. As the project progresses, it will be essential to monitor its development and assess its impact on the regional energy landscape.
