Tunisia Turns to Algeria to Meet Soaring Domestic Gas Demand Amid Exceptional Cold Snap
In the face of a surge in domestic gas demand due to an exceptional cold wave, Tunisia has turned to its Algerian neighbor for support. In early 2025, Algeria responded to this call by delivering over 22,000 tons of gas, thereby alleviating tensions on the Tunisian energy market. This intervention is part of a strengthened bilateral cooperation, marked by numerous agreements signed in recent years across various domains, from security to energy, according to Anadolu Agency.
Beyond financial and energy aid, Algeria is informally supporting the Tunisian economy. Cross-border trade exchanges are flourishing, particularly in essential goods. Moreover, Algerian tourism in Tunisia reached record levels in 2023, injecting much-needed foreign currency into the Tunisian economy. This support is motivated by several factors: a desire for regional stability, a willingness to strengthen historical and cultural ties between the two countries, and an awareness of Tunisia's importance as an economic and strategic partner.
Tunisia's energy dependence on Algeria is a determining factor in this relationship. Experts believe that this dependence could influence Tunisia's political choices, particularly in terms of international relations and economic policies. However, Tunisian authorities assert that their foreign policy remains independent and that they are seeking to diversify their partners.
