Railway Link between Tunis-Carthage Airport and City Center Advances

The railway link project between Tunis-Carthage Airport and the city center is moving forward. The project was reviewed during the restricted ministerial council meeting on February 25, 2026. It will be implemented in three phases, according to the route proposed by the Société des Transports de Tunis.

Project Phases

The project will be divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1: Connecting Avenue de la République to the airport via La Perle du Lac, spanning 8 km.
  • Phase 2: Extending from La Perle du Lac to Kheireddine (La Goulette), covering a distance of 10 km.
  • Phase 3: Covering 4 km between Jardins de Carthage, Ain Zaghouan, and Mongi Slim Hospital.

Fleet Expansion and Rehabilitation

To support this expansion, 30 new metro trains will be purchased. In parallel, 80 existing trains will be rehabilitated:

  • 55 trains will undergo heavy maintenance.
  • 15 new units will be added to the fleet to complement the existing trains.

Objective

The goal is straightforward: to facilitate travel within the Greater Tunis area and provide a rapid and direct link to the airport. Soon, residents will be able to reach the city center by metro without stress or traffic congestion.
