Tozeur-Nefta International Airport to be Powered by 4-Megawatt Solar Plant
The Tozeur-Nefta International Airport is expected to cover its entire electricity needs through a 4-megawatt photovoltaic solar plant, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2026. The project has reached a new milestone with the signing of the implementation contract between the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) and the company responsible for the work on Friday, June 19. This initiative is being carried out for the benefit of the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (OACA) as part of the Energy Transition Program in Public Establishments (TEEP).
Project Details
According to information provided by the OACA, the solar plant will be installed within the Tozeur-Nefta International Airport. This marks the first step towards integrating Tunisian airports into a "green airport" approach, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the use of renewable energy. The project consists of two parts:
- The installation of solar panels, under the supervision of the ANME, with an estimated foreign investment of 8.5 million dinars.
- The construction of a medium-voltage electrical transformer station and its connection to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) network, which will be financed by the OACA for approximately 2.5 million dinars.
Benefits of the Project
In addition to covering the entire energy needs of the Tozeur-Nefta airport, the solar plant will also enable the airport to meet nearly 45% of the electricity needs of the Djerba-Zarzis International Airport. This initiative is a significant step towards reducing the airport's carbon footprint and promoting the use of renewable energy in the aviation sector.
