Central Bank of Tunisia Maintains Gold Reserves with Significant Value Increase
The Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) has maintained its gold reserves at the same weight by the end of 2024, but with a significant increase in value. According to its financial statements, the gold reserves remain at 6.8 tonnes, but their valuation has reached 1.11 billion dinars, compared to 843.5 million dinars the previous year, representing an increase of 267.2 million dinars.
This increase is primarily due to two factors: the surge in gold prices on the international market and the appreciation of the US dollar against the dinar. The price of a gram of fine gold has risen from 66.31 USD at the end of 2023 to 83.94 USD in December 2024, while the dollar has appreciated from 3.0692 to 3.19415 dinars over the same period.
The majority of the gold bars, totaling 4.13 tonnes, are held in the vaults of the BCT and the Bank of England. The commemorative coins, which account for slightly over 2.6 tonnes, remain valued at the fixed official rate, without taking into account market fluctuations.
