Tunisia Sees Remarkable Tourist Influx in 2023 and 2024
In 2023, Tunisia witnessed a remarkable tourist influx with the arrival of 9.37 million visitors, representing a 45.5% increase compared to the previous year, despite a slight decrease compared to 2019 figures, according to the Tunisian News Agency (TAP).
This positive trend has continued into 2024, with the country already welcoming nearly 2.13 million tourists as of April 20, a 9.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Encouraged by these results, the Tunisian government is counting on a dynamic relaunch of the sector for the current year, as highlighted by the Minister of Tourism during his visit to Monastir on April 27, 2024.
Meanwhile, the governorate of Mahdia stands out with a 26.5% increase in overnight stays in its hotel units, reaching 70,116 nights from January 1 to April 10, 2024, according to the same source.
The average length of stay has also increased, reaching 4.4 days, indicating growing interest in the region. Despite a 7.2% decrease in the number of clients, the occupancy rate has grown by approximately 13.7%, thanks to the influx of tourists from traditional markets, particularly from the UK, Germany, and France.
Finally, Mahdia's hotel sector is preparing to welcome even more visitors with the reopening of a hotel on May 1, after two years of renovation work. Additionally, several projects are nearing completion, including two travel agencies, five guesthouses, two tourist restaurants, and a tourist animation center, which will enrich the region's tourist offerings.
