Tunisia Elected to Represent North Africa on African Ministerial Council on Meteorology for 2024-2026

The Tunisian government has announced that Tunisia has been elected to represent North Africa on the African Ministerial Council on Meteorology for the period of 2024-2026, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Transport on Thursday, May 16.

This election took place at the end of the 6th ordinary session of the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology, a key event for meteorological policies on the continent.

In addition to Tunisia, the council will include Uganda, which will assume the role of bureau chief, as well as Zambia for the southern African region and Ghana for the central African region.

Ahmed Hamam, Director General of the National Institute of Meteorology (INM), represented Tunisia during this session. The INM, under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport, is the permanent representative of Tunisia to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The African Ministerial Council on Meteorology was established during the first Ministerial Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2010. Initiated by the African Union and the WMO, this council is the primary governing body for meteorology in Africa, falling under the African Union Commission.

The council's main mission is to develop and implement policies and guidelines aimed at providing effective meteorological and climate services that meet the needs of African communities. It places particular emphasis on awareness-raising and education in this vital field.
