Tunisia Revitalizes Hydrotherapy Sector with New Initiatives

The Ministry of Health announced, on Friday, October 31, 2025, a series of decisions aimed at revitalizing the hydrotherapy sector in Tunisia. These measures aim to consolidate the country's position as an international reference destination for hydrotherapy and thalassotherapy, while stimulating economic and regional growth.

Key Initiatives

The Minister of Health, Mustapha Ferjani, presented a seven-point action plan to make hydrotherapy a medical, tourist, and economic sector. Among the key decisions is the integration of water treatment into several medical specialties, including:

  • Rheumatology
  • Dermatology
  • Functional rehabilitation
  • Certain mental health pathologies

National Rehabilitation Program

A national program for the rehabilitation of thermal and thalassotherapy centers will be launched jointly by the Ministries of Health and Tourism. This program will include the development of over 150 natural thermal sources located in inland regions, to encourage investment and create new local jobs.

Quality Assurance and Training

The Ministry also announced the creation of a "Spa Medical Tunisia" label, aimed at guaranteeing the quality of care and services offered in specialized establishments. A training plan for healthcare professionals and hydrotherapy technicians will be implemented, with a focus on continuous training.

Regulatory Framework and Promotion

The authorities plan to revise the specifications governing the sector, in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM), to allow for better coverage and expanded access to water-based care. Finally, a national and international promotional campaign will position Tunisia as a destination combining health, wellness, and sustainable regional development.

Tunisia's Ambition

With its abundant natural resources and recognized medical expertise, Tunisia aims to transform hydrotherapy into a strategic lever for health tourism and local development.
