Tunisia Confirms its Position as a Global Leader in Organic Farming
Tunisia has reaffirmed its position as a world leader in organic farming, particularly in the production of organic olives. According to data from the General Directorate of Organic Farming at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, the country ranks first globally in terms of land area dedicated to organic olive cultivation, with approximately 144,000 hectares.
A Qualitative Evolution of the Agricultural Sector
This achievement highlights the qualitative evolution of Tunisia's agricultural sector, which is focusing on high-value-added products and meeting the requirements of international markets. The organic sector currently covers around 235,000 hectares, representing a strategic pillar for the national agriculture industry.
Factors Contributing to this Dynamic
Several factors explain this trend, according to the TAP agency. Tunisia benefits from favorable climatic conditions, and producers have a recognized expertise. Certification systems comply with international standards, which strengthens the credibility of Tunisian products for export.
A Diversified Network of Actors
The sector is also supported by a diverse network of actors, comprising around 6,270 stakeholders, including producers, processors, and exporters. This organization improves the quality of products and facilitates their access to foreign markets.
Notable Progress in Organic Exports
Organic exports have shown significant growth, reaching approximately 750 million dinars in 2025. Organic olive oil is driving this growth, particularly in European and American markets.
International Recognition
Tunisia has also gained international recognition, with the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom acknowledging its organic standards. This recognition simplifies exports and strengthens Tunisia's presence in global markets.
