Tunisia Confirms its Position as a Pioneer in Africa's Energy Transition

Tunisia has confirmed its position as a pioneer in Africa's energy transition, ranking 33rd globally according to the Greenplexity Index 2024, published on November 5 by The Growth Lab at Harvard Kennedy School. This index, which covers 145 countries, measures the diversity and technological complexity of economies engaged in the production and transformation of green technologies. It highlights countries that can go beyond extracting natural resources to develop high-value-added products essential for global decarbonization.

Tunisia's Strong Industrial Clusters

Tunisia's good ranking can be explained by the solidity of its industrial clusters, particularly in the sectors of electrical engineering, composite materials, and mechanical components. The country now exports insulated electrical cables, glass fibers, aluminum plates, and nickel bars, demonstrating an industrial upgrade based on technical expertise and technological integration. These performances reflect Tunisia's ability to integrate into global value chains related to energy transition, a field where international demand is exploding, particularly for electric vehicles, renewable energies, and energy efficiency systems.

Morocco and Egypt Follow Tunisia's Lead

On the continent, Morocco comes in second with a 58th global rank, followed by Egypt (64th), Mauritius (67th), and South Africa (69th). These countries are also strengthening their capabilities in green technologies but remain behind Tunisia's industrial diversity. The top 10 African countries are completed by Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Chad, with the latter closing the list with an 89th global rank.

International Rankings

On an international scale, the most advanced economies maintain their advantage. Japan occupies the first place in the ranking, followed by Germany, the Czech Republic, France, and China. These countries illustrate the central role of innovation and technological sophistication in green growth.

Tunisia's Position in the Global Energy Transition

Thanks to its constantly evolving industry and solid technological base, Tunisia is positioning itself today as a key player in Africa's energy transition, capable of attracting new investments and consolidating its role in the global decarbonization chain.
