Tunisia Ranks Among Top 10 African Countries in Energy Consumption per Capita

A recent ranking by the CIA has placed Tunisia among the top 10 African countries in terms of energy consumption per capita.

The ranking takes into account the average consumption of fossil fuels in BTU (British Thermal Units) per capita and per country. Libya tops the list with 117.6 BTU, followed by Seychelles with 111.2 BTU, and South Africa with 95.5 BTU. Libya's high energy consumption is largely due to its oil production.

Several factors can explain the disparities in energy consumption, including a country's level of industrialization, climate conditions, and the share of renewable energy in its energy mix.

Despite having a relatively low level of industrial activity, Tunisia ranks 9th among the top energy-consuming countries in Africa.

However, Tunisia has made a commitment to shift towards renewable energy sources, investing heavily in this sector and aiming to have renewables account for 35% of its electricity mix by 2030.

Here is the ranking:

  1. Libya: 117.6 BTU
  2. Seychelles: 111.2 BTU
  3. South Africa: 95.5 BTU
  4. Algeria: 58.4 BTU
  5. Mauritius: 54.4 BTU
  6. Equatorial Guinea: 41.4 BTU
  7. Botswana: 39.2 BTU
  8. Egypt: 36.4 BTU
  9. Tunisia: 33.6 BTU
  10. Morocco: 24.9 BTU
