Tunisia Achieves Global Recognition in Public Health
Tunisia has obtained worldwide recognition in the field of public health. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday, May 14, 2026, the official validation of the elimination of trachoma, also known as "granular ophthalmia", as a public health problem in the country.
A Historic Achievement in Public Health
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, described this progress as a "historic achievement in public health", congratulating Tunisia on this accomplishment. Hanan Balkhy also emphasized that this recognition reflects "a constant and lasting national commitment" to combating the causes of avoidable blindness.
A Result of Decades of Effort
According to the Ministry of Health, this result is the fruit of several decades of fieldwork involving various actors in the health system. The efforts focused on:
