Tunisia Takes a Major Step Towards Food Sovereignty with the Launch of National Food Security Monitoring Platform

The official launch of Tunisia's national food security monitoring platform, foodsecurity.tn, marks a significant milestone in the country's efforts to strengthen its food sovereignty.

Event Overview

The launch event was presided over by Hamadi Habaieb, Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, in charge of Water Resources, during a national workshop dedicated to food security. The meeting brought together representatives from the World Food Programme, the Principality of Monaco, the Bizerte Development Pole, the National Observatory for Agriculture, as well as several national and international partners.

Keynote Address

In his opening speech, Habaieb emphasized that food security is a national priority and a strategic pillar of sustainable development and Tunisian sovereignty. He highlighted that recent economic, health, and geopolitical crises have demonstrated the urgency of establishing an integrated national monitoring system, based on reliable and up-to-date data, to guide public policies more effectively.

The Food Security Platform

The new foodsecurity.tn platform aims to be a central digital tool that gathers data, indicators, and analyses related to food security. Its primary objective is to strengthen coordination between different public institutions, international partners, and actors in the agricultural sector.

Cooperation and Future Directions

The Secretary of State praised the fruitful cooperation between Onagri, the Bizerte Development Pole, and the World Food Programme, which made the project a reality. He also stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to achieve food sovereignty, including:

  • Developing local production
  • Ensuring sustainable water management
  • Improving governance of strategic stocks
  • Promoting agricultural research and innovation

Conclusion and Future Commitments

In closing the meeting, Habaieb reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to continuing the implementation of national food security strategies by 2030 and 2035, within a vision focused on sustainability, resilience, and inclusion, with the goal of creating a stronger and more autonomous Tunisian food system.
