Tunisian Government Unblocks Funds to Settle Construction Sector Debts and Launches Ambitious Public Transport Modernization Plan

The Tunisian government has decided to release funds to settle a significant portion of the debts owed to construction and public works companies. This initiative aims to revive stalled infrastructure projects and support the national economy. In parallel, an ambitious plan to modernize public transportation has been announced, including the acquisition of new vehicles and the rehabilitation of existing equipment.

These decisions were made during a restricted ministerial council meeting, chaired by Head of Government Kamel Maddouri, on January 3, 2025, at the Kasbah Palace.

Settlement of Debts and Support for Businesses

In response to the accumulated delays in infrastructure project implementation, the government has acted to pay off debts to construction companies. This measure is accompanied by coordination with the Central Bank to provide businesses with the necessary facilities to participate in public tenders.

This decision is part of the presidential recommendations aimed at accelerating the implementation of funded projects, while ensuring safe and dignified mobility conditions for citizens.

Modernization of Public Transport

The public transportation sector, a key aspect of daily life for Tunisians, will benefit from significant investments. The main measures include:

  • The acquisition of 418 additional buses, in addition to the 300 already ordered.
  • The launch of a tender for 30 new metro trains, accompanied by maintenance equipment and a dedicated digital platform for their maintenance.
  • The rehabilitation of 20 metro trains currently out of service through a maintenance program.
  • The allocation of annual budgets to the Tunis Transport Company for the maintenance and modernization of its infrastructure.

The council also requested the Ministry of Transport to develop restructuring plans for public land, sea, and air transport companies. These plans aim to improve their governance, performance, and service quality.
