Human Development Report 2025: Tunisia Ranks Among Top 10 African Countries
According to the 2025 Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), based on 2023 data, Tunisia is among the top 10 African countries with a "high" level of human development. With a Human Development Index (HDI) score of 0.746, the country ranks behind Algeria (0.763) and Egypt (0.754), but ahead of Libya (0.741) and Morocco (0.710).
Top Performers in Africa
At the top of the continent, Seychelles (0.848) and Mauritius (0.806) stand out as the only African countries to achieve a "very high" level of human development, thanks to better performance in life expectancy, income per capita, and education. Following closely, several North African and sub-Saharan nations maintain a "high" ranking, including South Africa, Gabon, and Botswana.
Persistent Disparities
The report highlights that despite measured progress at the African level, significant disparities persist. Nineteen countries have a "medium" development level, with scores between 0.5 and 0.59, while 23 countries remain in the "low" category, including South Sudan (0.388), Somalia (0.404), and the Central African Republic (0.414).
