Tunisia Aims to Increase Renewable Energy Production
Tunisia plans to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity production to 80% by 2050, with intermediate targets of 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2035. This goal is accompanied by a 62% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035, according to Nafaâ Bakkari, Director General of the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME), in a statement to the TAP.
A Modest Starting Point
It is worth noting that Tunisia is starting from a low base. The current contribution of renewable energy to Tunisian electricity production does not exceed 9%, with natural gas covering between 97% and 98% of this production. However, since its creation in 1985, the ANME has achieved an energy savings of 14 million tons of oil equivalent, equivalent to approximately 14 billion dinars.
Concrete Projects
The next phase of this transition, announced by the ANME official, includes new projects in Sidi Bouzid, Gafsa, and Gabès, as well as calls for tenders for an additional 600 megawatts of solar power and 900 megawatts of wind power. The total capacity installed is expected to reach approximately 4,800 megawatts by 2035.
Funding and International Recognition
In terms of funding, the Energy Transition Fund subsidizes between 20% and 50% of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects for individuals and businesses, and covers 70% of the financing for studies and training. Tunisia also benefits from international funding, including the Green Climate Fund, and is ranked among the top 20 countries in the world in terms of energy efficiency out of 120 countries evaluated.
