Tunisian Startup Chitelix Selected as Finalist in MassChallenge Switzerland Program

The Tunisian startup Chitelix, specializing in the valorization of waste from the fishing industry, has been selected as a finalist in the international acceleration program MassChallenge Switzerland. The company is among the projects retained after a selection process that examined over 1,961 applications from around the world.

Recognition of a Circular Marine Biotechnology Model

This distinction rewards the development of a circular marine biotechnology model based on the transformation of fishing by-products into sustainable biopolymers and high-value biosourced solutions.

About Chitelix

Based in Bizerte, Chitelix was founded by Anis Ben Ghalia and his associate. The startup was born out of a observation related to the blue crab industry, whose export generates significant amounts of waste daily. Rather than eliminating them, the company developed a process to extract chitosan, a natural biopolymer used as an alternative to petrochemical plastics.

Production Process

Located on a 1,300 m² site at the Bizerte agri-food hub, Chitelix's pilot plant transforms crab waste into chitosan and calcium citrate. Each ton of raw material treated produces approximately 150 kilograms of chitosan, used in various sectors such as agriculture, cosmetics, pharmacy, and bioplastics.
