Ministry of Agriculture and Hydraulic Resources Unveils Promising Forecasts for 2025 Cereal Season
The Ministry of Agriculture and Hydraulic Resources has revealed particularly encouraging forecasts for the 2025 cereal season. The harvest could reach 19.8 million quintals, a significant increase compared to the 11.5 million quintals harvested during the previous season.
In response to a written question from MP Besma Hammami, published on the official website of the People's Representatives Assembly, the ministry specified that the collection capacity for the 2024/2025 campaign is estimated at around 8 million quintals.
To meet this demand, the authorities have renewed contracts for the rental of 50 collection centers for a period of 9 years. Furthermore, the Cereals Office has launched tenders to occupy eight vacant collection centers. Three of them have been attributed to Nadhour, Hajeb El Ayoun, and Teboursouk, while the Ras Jebel center in the Bizerte governorate remains to be allocated.
In addition, several annexes offering a capacity of around 240,000 quintals have been identified in the governorates of Siliana, Jendouba, Kairouan, and Zaghouan, reinforcing the territorial network for collection.
Regarding storage, the ministry indicated that the Cereals Office's infrastructure can currently accommodate around 4.3 million quintals, divided between strategic stocks and evacuation volumes.
To ensure optimal management of the harvest, an agreement has been concluded with the Tunisian National Chamber of Mills, allowing for the exploitation of nearly 3 million quintals of vacant capacity in mills between June and August 2025. Additional storage spaces of around 1 million quintals will also complement this logistics.
According to the ministry, the collection network now extends to 190 centers, with 14 recently added, testifying to the willingness to continually improve the system. The transportation of cereals mobilizes 7 trucks belonging to the Cereals Office, as well as around 400 private trucks and 40 railcars, ensuring the transfer of cereals from production areas to regional silos in Greater Tunis.
Finally, the ministry highlighted that the total area affected by fires reached approximately 200 hectares as of June 30.
