Water Scarcity Ranks Top among Economic Concerns in Tunisia
According to the annual report on global risks published by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Arab Institute of Business Leaders (IACE), water scarcity has become a major concern for economic leaders in Tunisia. This 20th edition highlights the challenges that economic decision-makers in the country must face, reflecting a significant shift in priorities.
Conducted in September 2024, the study identifies five major risks weighing on the Tunisian economy: economic slowdown, food shortages, public debt, inflation, and, at the top, water scarcity. This shift in concerns testifies to the transformation of economic stakes. In 2023, business leaders' priorities still included the debt crisis, raw material tensions, state collapse, and the cost of living. In 2024, water and climate-related risks have taken center stage in their concerns.
Tunisia is not an isolated case. In Morocco, entrepreneurs also rank water scarcity as the top threat for 2025, in a regional context marked by worsening water stress and the effects of climate change. These trends highlight an increased awareness of environmental issues and their direct impact on North African economies.
