Libya Signs Agreement to Create Smart Oil Cities, Aiming to Modernize Hydrocarbon Sector

According to EcoFin agency, Libya has signed an agreement on September 25 between Libyan public telecom operators and the National Oil Corporation to transform Ras Lanuf, a port city, into the first smart oil city.

The main objective is to establish a digital infrastructure utilizing the latest telecommunications technologies to improve the efficiency of oil operations. This includes the integration of automated systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) to optimize production, reduce costs, and carbon emissions.

This initiative is part of Libya's economic diversification and resource optimization strategy. With 97% of exports and 68% of GDP dependent on hydrocarbons, Libya is also positioning itself as a leader in African ICT development, according to the International Telecommunication Union.

Smart oil cities aim not only to enhance energy efficiency but also to improve the quality of life by integrating sustainable solutions and diversifying the economy beyond the oil sector.
