Tunisia Increases Tourist Tax in 2024
Since the beginning of 2024, the tourist tax in Tunisia has been increased. Initially imposed only on individual travelers, it now also applies to tourists booking through tour operators.
It is worth recalling that this decision, introduced in the 2024 Finance Law adopted in December 2023, aims to broaden the tax base.
In fact, the new rates vary depending on the accommodation categories. In 2-star hotels, foreign tourists pay 4 dinars per night, compared to 1 dinar for Maghreb and Tunisian nationals.
For 3-star hotels, the tax increases to 8 dinars for foreigners and 2 dinars for local residents.
In 4- and 5-star establishments, it reaches 12 dinars for international visitors and 3 dinars for Maghreb and Tunisian nationals.
It is noteworthy that these amounts also apply to guesthouses, rural inns, and furnished apartments.
While this increase aims to boost tax revenue in a challenging economic context, it raises questions about its impact on the country's tourist attractiveness.
To alleviate these concerns, the authorities have maintained reduced rates for local and regional tourists, seeking to preserve competitiveness at the Maghreb level.
