Postal Workers' Strike Called Off After Negotiations with Authorities

The General Federation of La Poste, affiliated with the UGTT, had planned a strike for February 25 and 26, 2025. The union had a long list of demands, primarily financial in nature. The choice of dates was not coincidental, as it coincided with the period leading up to Ramadan, when demand for postal services increases. Many people receive their salaries and retirement pensions during this time to prepare for the holy month.

After negotiations with the authorities, the strike scheduled for next week has been cancelled, allowing for additional talks to take place. In exchange, the promotions signed on October 2, 2020, will be implemented, and the social fund will come into effect.

In recent weeks, social protests have been on the rise. La Poste is a profitable financial institution, and these promotions will not significantly disrupt its balance sheets. However, in other sectors, such as phosphates, the entire country is paying a heavy price. While the country is struggling to secure external financing, we are letting slip additional export revenue of no less than one billion dinars. Everyone is losing out, with the CPG and GCT having no financial leeway to respond to the example set by La Poste.

This year will see the launch of several negotiation cycles, including one with public sector representatives. The last increase under the 2022 agreement has been allocated, and a new framework needs to be put in place to avoid disruptions to production. However, this time, the discussions will be tough, as purchasing power has been severely eroded over the past three years.
