France to Borrow Record €174.8 Billion to Repay Medium and Long-Term Debt in 2025
Every year, France must borrow more to honor its debts, and 2025 will be no exception. A record amount of €174.8 billion will be allocated to repaying the state's medium and long-term debt.
This figure is part of a total borrowing of €300 billion, an increase from the €270 billion in 2023 and €285 billion in 2024. One of the main objectives of this borrowing is to repay creditors of loans reaching maturity. According to the Agence France Trésor (AFT), €174.8 billion will be used for this purpose in 2025.
The state's financing needs will amount to €306.7 billion, a decrease of €12.7 billion compared to 2024. Antoine Deruennes, General Director of the AFT, explained that the increase in borrowing amounts in 2025 is due to the higher number of bonds reaching maturity that year.
