Meeting between Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy and EBRD Director

On Wednesday, August 21, a meeting took place between Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, and Nodira Mansurova, Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) office.

This meeting provided an opportunity for Nodira Mansurova to reaffirm the bank's commitment to supporting projects related to the ministry, particularly by participating in the financing of the electrical interconnection project between Tunisia and Italy. This project aims to connect the transmission networks of Europe and North Africa, ensuring a safer, more sustainable, and renewable energy future.

It is worth noting that this project, which began in 2017 and is set to be completed in 2028, has received a financing contribution of 125 million euros from the EBRD and the German public fund KfW, disbursed in June 2024 to the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Steg). The loan package is dedicated to the realization of the electrical interconnection on the Tunisian side and will contribute to financing the purchase of the approximately 200 km long underwater cable, which crosses the Sicily Canal.

It was also highlighted that the bank granted a 300 million euro loan to Steg in 2021 to implement a financial and technical reform program, as well as two grants from the European Union, amounting to 22.5 and 1.5 million euros, respectively.
