Partnership for Sustainable Development in Kerkennah
ONU-Habitat Tunisia, the Tunisian Federation for Environment and Development, and the Bank of Tunisia and the Emirates Sign Agreement
ONU-Habitat Tunisia, the Tunisian Federation for Environment and Development, and the Bank of Tunisia and the Emirates (BTE) signed an agreement on October 13, 2025, to support sustainable development in Kerkennah. This initiative is part of the Soumoud project, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation.
Background
Kerkennah, an archipelago rich in biodiversity but heavily affected by climate change, is at the heart of this project. The goal is to strengthen the resilience of its inhabitants through local, environmentally friendly solutions built with the population.
Objectives of the Partnership
This public-private-associative partnership aims to enhance the natural, cultural, and human capital of the island. It promotes social innovation, citizen participation, and ecological transition, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11. The involvement of the BTE also marks a shift towards greener and more responsible finance.
Roles of the Partners
- ONU-Habitat brings its expertise in sustainable urban planning
- The Tunisian Federation for Environment and Development mobilizes civil society
- The BTE supports investment in projects with social and environmental impact
Focus on Inclusion
The partnership places particular emphasis on the inclusion of vulnerable groups: women, youth, migrants, and fishermen.
Vision for Kerkennah
Together, these actors aim to make Kerkennah a model of ecological and social innovation, capable of inspiring other Mediterranean territories facing climate challenges.
