Kenya Signs Final Contract for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Expansion
The Kenyan government has officially signed the final contract for the expansion of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), a strategic project aimed at strengthening the country's position as a major aviation hub in East Africa.
Project Details
The agreement, estimated to be around $1.2 billion, was concluded with an international consortium led by China Road and Bridge Corporation, according to ecofin agency. The project aims to address the growing saturation of the airport's infrastructure, which has reached its limits with over 9 million passengers recorded in 2024.
Expansion Plans
The expansion plans include:
- Construction of a new terminal
- Modernization of existing facilities
- Improvement of airside infrastructure and access The annual capacity of the airport is expected to nearly triple to around 22 million passengers in the long term.
Strategic Importance
This project is part of a broader strategy by Kenya to maintain its regional leadership in the face of rising competition from other African hubs such as Addis Ababa or Kigali. The project's financing will be structured with the support of African and international development institutions.
Background
Initially conceived under a different partnership model, the project was readjusted after the abandonment of a previous agreement with a private group, illustrating the government's willingness to regain direct control of strategic infrastructure.
