OpenAI Fights Back Against New York Times' Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

In December, "The New York Times" (NYT) became the first major American media company to sue OpenAI, alleging copyright infringement for using millions of its articles to train ChatGPT. Now, OpenAI is counterattacking, demanding proof that the NYT's articles are authentic.

OpenAI's lawyers have already filed a request with the New York district court, asking the NYT to produce documents proving which parts of the millions of articles in question are original and come from the Times, and which ones do not pass the test.

Specifically, OpenAI has requested interview memos, journalists' notes, file recordings, and other documents cited in the NYT's articles, stating that it is not seeking the identity of the newspaper's sources.

The New York Times submitted a file last week, claiming that OpenAI's request is nothing but harassment and retaliation.

This comes in the context of journalism, and more broadly the field of communication, being increasingly threatened by the arrival of artificial intelligence, which has turned the world upside down.
