African Video Game Market Surpasses $1 Billion in Revenue in 2024
Driven by Improved Connectivity, Smartphone Adoption, and Tech-Savvy Youth
According to the "2025 Africa Games Industry Report" published by Maliyo Games, a Nigerian studio, the African video game market generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2024. This growth is attributed to improved connectivity, increased smartphone adoption, and a tech-savvy youth population.
Mobile Games Dominate the Market
Mobile games account for nearly 90% of the market, driven by the increasing accessibility of smartphones, strengthened digital infrastructure, and innovation from African studios that incorporate local narratives into their creations. These games have found an audience not only in Africa but also internationally.
Console and PC Games Gain Traction
In parallel, console and PC games are gaining ground in countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, and Algeria, where brands like PlayStation and Xbox are contributing to diversifying the offer.
Esports on the Rise
Esports, or electronic sports, are also experiencing significant growth, with popular competitions like Comic Con Africa and The African Esports Championship.
Tunisia Leads in Mobile Gaming
In Tunisia, the mobile gaming market stands out among the top five countries in Africa. In 2024, revenue from in-app purchases on mobile games reached $6.8 million, demonstrating continued growth despite modest revenue compared to larger markets like South Africa ($111.9 million) and Egypt ($60.9 million).
