Japan Airlines Suffers Cyberattack, Disrupting Flight Operations and Ticket Sales
Japan Airlines (JAL), Japan's second-largest airline, announced on December 26, 2024, via its social media platform X, that it had fallen victim to a cyberattack at 7:24 am Japanese time (22:24 GMT on Wednesday). The attack disrupted the airline's computer systems, leading to the suspension of ticket sales for the day and potentially impacting both domestic and international flight operations.
"The cause of the outage has been identified and addressed. We are currently verifying the status of the system's recovery," the airline stated. While the exact extent of the situation remains unclear, JAL confirmed that disruptions may affect its flights. Nine domestic flights and several international flights have already experienced delays, and ticket sales for same-day flights have been suspended, complicating the situation for passengers.
Furthermore, the impact of the cyberattack extends beyond flight operations. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, JAL's stock price plummeted by 2.5% in the morning before stabilizing at a 1.3% decline, despite a positive market trend.
