The Embassy of Tunisia in Tokyo organized a scientific seminar on Tunisian olive oil on January 20, 2026, accompanied by a tasting session of selected samples. The goal of this meeting was to present the distinctive qualities of the "green gold" and to explain how to strengthen its presence in the Japanese market.
Experts from the sector, as well as representatives from the University of Tsukuba, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Japanese Olive Oil Tasters Association, led the discussions. Japanese media were also present to cover the event, as reported by the TAP agency. This initiative is part of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Tunisia, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary in 2026. The two countries have been cooperating for several years in economic and commercial sectors, with a particular interest in promoting Tunisian exports, including olive oil.
"In fact, the product was already highlighted during the Osaka International Expo in 2025, where the Tunisian pavilion welcomed over 630,000 visitors and organized several tasting sessions and culinary demonstrations," according to the same source.
Key Figures
The Tunisian Ministry of Trade reported that Tunisia exported approximately 108,000 tons of olive oil in the last quarter of 2025, including 50,000 tons in December alone.
Future Prospects
According to estimates, Tunisia could soon become the world's second-largest producer of olive oil.
