Ministry of Equipment Addresses Urgent Repairs and Flood Protection
Following Heavy Rains in January 2026
The Minister of Equipment and Housing, Slah Zouari, chaired a working session on Thursday, February 26, to discuss the activities of the Urban Water Directorate. The meeting was attended by the President of the Cabinet, the Director of Urban Water, and several ministry officials.
Urgent Repairs and Flood Protection Projects
In response to the heavy rains on January 19 and 20, 2026, a call for tenders will be launched to carry out urgent repair work, estimated to cost 22.6 million dinars. For 2026, 29 projects are underway in several governorates, with a total budget of approximately 396 million dinars. These projects include:
- Flood protection for certain cities and urban areas, particularly in Tunis
- Development of the Gabès wadi and its tributaries, with an allocation of 220 million dinars
Infrastructure Maintenance and Technical Studies
The meeting also discussed infrastructure maintenance and technical studies. Currently, 39 studies are being conducted in 24 governorates, with a total cost of approximately 13.8 million dinars.
Previous Achievements and Future Plans
In 2025, nearly 3,640 km of canals and wadis were cleaned, as well as 70 hectares of retention basins, with a budget of 36 million dinars. For 2026, 3,800 km of canals and 70 hectares of basins will be maintained, with a budget of 37 million dinars.
Challenges and Coordination Efforts
The meeting highlighted the difficulties encountered, including the accumulation of waste in certain infrastructure, and the importance of coordinating with central, regional, and local authorities to find solutions. The Minister emphasized the need to maintain this coordination to accelerate work and effectively protect neighborhoods and residents from flooding.
