Tunisia Accelerates Its Push Toward Industry 4.0

Tunisia is fast-tracking its transition to smart manufacturing. On Wednesday, September 30, in Tunis, a new support program was launched to guide industrial companies toward Industry 4.0. The initiative aims to help businesses integrate digital technologies, modernize their production processes, and enhance their overall competitiveness.

Strategic Vision and Digital Integration

At the opening of the launch conference, Salah Zouari, Minister of Equipment and Housing (who also oversees the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy), emphasized that this transformation relies heavily on the adoption of new technologies and the integration of digital solutions into industrial workflows.

The program is anchored by a dedicated Smart Industry Platform housed within the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII). This platform is tasked with:

  • Coordinating national initiatives in the smart industry sector.
  • Addressing the specific needs of businesses.
  • Contributing to the development of the national "I4.0 Tunisia" label.

Regional Competence Centers and Impact

The program also establishes five specialized competence centers for smart industry, strategically located in the technology hubs of:

  • Sousse
  • Sfax
  • Monastir
  • Bizerte
  • Sidi Thabet

These centers are designed to provide technological services to companies and various stakeholders within the industrial ecosystem.

According to figures released by the Ministry, the initiative has already achieved significant milestones:

  • 400+ industrial companies supported.
  • ~50 startups created.
  • ~2,900 beneficiaries trained.

Focus on Skills and Human Capital

Developing human capital is a central pillar of the program. Key achievements in this area include:

  • 23 international experts have obtained certification in smart industry.
  • Three professional master’s programs have been launched since 2023.
  • A dedicated smart industry training program has been implemented at the Sfax Vocational Training Center.

Introducing TIMA: A New Assessment Tool

During the event, the APII also unveiled TIMA (Tunisian Intelligent Manufacturing Assessment). Developed in collaboration with the smart industry competence centers, this tool enables companies to:

  1. Evaluate their current progress in their Industry 4.0 transformation journey.
  2. Identify specific areas requiring improvement and strategic focus.

International Collaboration

This national initiative is led by the Ministry of Industry in close collaboration with GIZ (German International Cooperation) and UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization).
