Transparency International Releases Annual Corruption Index

Measuring Corruption Perception in 180 Countries Worldwide

Transparency International, a non-governmental organization committed to combating corruption, has released its annual index, which assesses the perception of corruption in 180 countries globally. The score takes into account the means of recording, stopping, punishing, and fighting corruption cases. A higher score indicates a more effective fight against corruption.

Tunisia's Score Drops, Still Surpasses Neighboring Countries

Tunisia, which scored 40 in the 2023 report, has been assigned a score of 39 in the 2024 report. Despite this drop, Tunisia still surpasses Morocco with a score of 37, Algeria with a score of 34, Mauritania with a score of 30, and Libya with a score of only 13.

Corruption and Climate Crisis: A Direct Link

This year's report highlights the direct link between corruption and the climate crisis. Certain decision-makers hinder the adoption of good policies and practices, prioritizing a restricted segment of interests and individuals, which exacerbates the situation and slows down efforts to combat climate change.

Democracy and Corruption: A Correlation

The report also notes that full democracies, represented by 24 countries, have an average score of 73. Imperfect democracies, comprising 50 countries, have an average score of 47. The remaining 95 countries, considered non-democratic regimes, have an average score of 33. This segmentation aims to associate the importance of political climate with corruption control.
